ECB Connects Blockchain Markets with Euro Payment System
The European Central Bank (ECB) has taken a significant step forward in its efforts to develop a digital euro. The ECB has launched the Pontes project, which links blockchain markets with the euro area's existing payment systems. This project will allow banks to settle tokenized wholesale transactions in central-bank money.
The Pontes project is seen as an intermediate solution, and it will eventually be replaced by Appia, a longer-term solution that aims to integrate blockchain technology into the euro area's payment systems more seamlessly. A blueprint for Appia is expected to be ready in 2028.
The ECB's move marks a key step forward in its efforts to develop a digital euro for consumers by the end of the decade. This project has been underway since at least 2026, and it has significant implications for the future of payments in the euro area.
