ECB Dives into Tokenized Securities via Pontes
The European Central Bank (ECB) is set to invest in tokenized securities through its platform, Pontes. This move will give the ECB hands-on experience with distributed ledger technology and allow officials to study trading, settlement, and portfolio management.
The ECB's initial purchases will focus on euro-denominated securities from governments, agencies, and supranational institutions. These assets will form part of the central bank's non-monetary policy portfolio, generating income for operating expenses.
Pontes is a Eurosystem platform designed to adapt central bank money for digital financial markets. The ECB launched Pontes to facilitate the use of tokenized assets using central bank money.
