ECB Economist Lane Sees Limited Second-Round Inflation Effects from Energy Costs
European Central Bank (ECB) chief economist Philip Lane has downplayed concerns over second-round inflation effects from high euro zone energy costs. In an interview with Italian news agency ANSA published on Tuesday, Lane noted that while energy prices remain elevated, the pass-through impact on the broader economy has not been significant so far.
Lane emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the strength of such effects, cautioning against oversimplifying the economic outlook. He stated, "We have not seen so far very strong second-round effects. We continue to look at them." This remark highlights the ECB's cautious approach to assessing the economic impact of energy price fluctuations.
Lane also stressed that energy prices are high but the extent to which these costs will affect the rest of the economy remains unclear. He added, "That's why, even though I am a promoter of the scenarios, it is too simplistic to say we're in the adverse scenario or the baseline scenario." This reflects the ECB's nuanced view of the current economic environment.
