ECB Economist Sees Italian Wages Outpacing Inflation by 2027-28
The European Central Bank's Chief Economist, Philip Lane, has expressed optimism about Italy's economic resilience, suggesting that wages in the country will outpace inflation in the coming years. In an interview with ANSA, Lane highlighted that the ECB's September projections indicate stronger wage growth than inflation for Italy in 2027 and 2028.
Lane emphasized the "fundamental solidity" of the Italian economy, which he believes will support improvements in real wages and living standards in 2024 and 2025. Despite the current challenges posed by soaring energy prices due to the Iran war, Lane remains confident in Italy's ability to recover.
However, he acknowledged that high energy prices represent a significant loss for the European economy as a whole. Lane cautioned that it is not possible to fully protect all workers from these economic impacts at all times.
