ECB Economist Sees No Strong Second-Round Inflation Effects from Energy Costs
European Central Bank (ECB) chief economist Philip Lane has indicated that high energy costs in the euro zone have not yet triggered significant second-round inflation effects. In an interview with Italian news agency ANSA, Lane emphasized that while energy prices remain elevated, the extent to which these costs will impact the broader economy is still uncertain.
Lane stated, "We have not seen so far very strong second-round effects. We continue to look at them." He cautioned against oversimplifying the economic outlook, noting that it is premature to categorize the current situation as either an adverse scenario or a baseline scenario.
The ECB economist acknowledged the complexity of predicting the economic ripple effects of energy price fluctuations. "Energy prices are high but the strength of the pass-through to the rest of the economy remains uncertain," he added, highlighting the need for ongoing monitoring and analysis.
