ECB economist warns of uncertain inflation effects from high energy costs
European Central Bank chief economist Professor Philip Lane has stated that high energy costs in the euro zone have not yet triggered significant second-round inflation effects. In an interview with Italian news agency ANSA, Lane acknowledged that while energy prices remain elevated, the extent of their impact on the broader economy remains uncertain.
Lane emphasized that the ECB continues to monitor these potential inflationary effects closely. He cautioned against oversimplifying the economic outlook by categorizing current conditions as either an adverse scenario or a baseline scenario. The strength of the pass-through from energy prices to the rest of the economy, he noted, is still an open question.
The ECB's chief economist reiterated his support for scenario-based planning but stressed the need for a nuanced approach. The interview, published today, underscores the ECB's cautious stance as it navigates the complexities of the current economic environment.
