ECB Economists Warn of Stock Market Correction Spillover into Crypto
Five economists at the European Central Bank (ECB) have warned of an impending stock market correction that could also impact cryptocurrency markets. In a recent analysis, Malin Andersson, Johannes Breckenfelder, Stefano Corradin, Kalin Nikolov, and Maria Antonietta Viola argue that current stock valuations are likely to correct, regardless of whether they are rational or not.
The economists point out that US valuations have reached levels close to their historical highs. They warn that this macro correction risk could spill over into the crypto markets, affecting factors such as price action, DeFi and DEX/CEX liquidity, token fundraising, and broader adoption. However, they note that policy or earnings normalization could potentially mitigate this risk.
The analysts emphasize that their conclusion holds whether or not current prices are rational. This implies that the correction may be unavoidable, even if investors believe today's prices reflect true market values.
