ECB Enters Tokenized Securities Market with Direct Investment
The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking a significant step into tokenized securities by investing in them directly. This move marks a shift from merely building the infrastructure for digital asset markets to actively participating in them.
The ECB will settle trades on its own new rail, known as Pontes, which it has developed for transactions running on distributed ledger technology. The bank's investment is focused on euro-denominated debt issued by central and regional governments, their agencies, and European supranational bodies.
This move is not a monetary policy instrument but rather comes from the ECB's own funds portfolio, which helps pay the bank's operating costs. The decision to invest is contingent on how tokenized issuance develops, with the size of the program dependent on market supply.
