ECB Expands Swap Lines, Eyes AI Boost for Euro
Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), announced plans to expand its ties to foreign central banks through new global swap lines. This move aims to make it easier for these banks to borrow euros in times of crisis.
The ECB currently maintains swap agreements with key partners such as the US Federal Reserve and central banks of Japan, the UK, Canada, and Switzerland. These agreements allow for emergency liquidity, enabling foreign banks to borrow euros against their own currency.
Lagarde stated that these new swap lines will be 'more responsive' to the need for a strong euro and will help safeguard the eurozone from external shocks. This push is part of a series of efforts to boost the euro's position as an international currency, following Lagarde's article in July last year.
In related news, Lagarde also spoke about the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform Europe's economy and improve living standards. She highlighted that firms in the euro area are set to devote 10% of their total investment to AI this year, with AI-related borrowing accounting for a quarter of credit growth.
