ECB Invests in Tokenized Securities via Pontes Distributed Ledger System
The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking a bold step into tokenized securities by investing its own funds in this new asset class. The bank will use Pontes, its distributed ledger technology-based transaction system, to settle these purchases with central bank money.
According to the ECB's announcement, the initiative aims to give the institution firsthand experience across the full investment lifecycle, including trade execution, settlement, systems, and portfolio management.
The initial investments will focus on euro-denominated securities issued by euro-area central and regional governments, public agencies, and European supranational institutions. The ECB's Executive Board will determine the timing and operational details after the preparatory work is completed.
