ECB Invites Private Sector to Join Digital Euro Innovation Push
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched an innovation push for its digital euro platform, inviting private companies and organizations to participate in the next phase of development.
The initiative will focus on two main workstreams: experimentation and exploration. The experimentation track will transform potential digital euro applications into working solutions, with areas under consideration including e-receipts, multi-payee transactions, and conditional payments.
Experiments are scheduled to run from January to June 2027, during which selected participants will develop and test solutions before submitting a proof of concept and an outcome report. The exploration workstream will look further ahead, examining technologies that could strengthen the future digital euro infrastructure, including the intersection with artificial intelligence and agentic payments.
The ECB is increasingly exploring how a central-bank digital currency could support intelligent, automated, and potentially AI-driven payment ecosystems while retaining security, interoperability, and public trust.
