ECB Launches Digital Euro Initiative, Focuses on AI and Practical Testing
The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced the start of a new wave of initiatives within its digital euro platform. Payment providers, fintech companies, merchants, public institutions, research institutions, and consumer associations are invited to participate in the program.
The application period will last until November 9, 2026, and the list of selected participants will be published in January 2027.
A key development direction for the digital euro is artificial intelligence. The ECB plans to explore innovative payment solutions that utilize AI, as well as the operation of AI agents, micropayments, automatic payment processing between devices, and the introduction of new features in payment applications.
Participants must ensure that such solutions align with the principles of the digital euro, privacy, trust, user control, and data protection. The research will take place in the format of specialized seminars at the ECB's premises in Frankfurt, scheduled for the first and second quarters of 2027.
