ECB Launches Digital Euro Pilot Program for Online Merchants
The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially launched its digital euro pilot program, inviting online and mobile merchants to participate in testing the currency. The 12-month beta pilot is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 and will focus on stress-testing the digital euro across live e-commerce and m-commerce checkout environments.
The primary objective of the pilot is to evaluate the technical readiness and user experience of the digital euro, with key metrics including technical functionality, operational workflows, and customer journey. Participating merchants will process transactions using a simulated 'beta digital euro' that is functionally and technically aligned with draft EU legislation but operates strictly as a test asset without legal tender status.
The ECB has selected 36 payment service providers (PSPs) to build and maintain the gateway infrastructure for the pilot, and merchants must execute a formal agreement with the ECB and partner directly with an onboarded PSP capable of handling digital euro rails. The pilot will create significant ripples across parallel payment markets, including commercial card networks and interchange fees.
