ECB Launches Pontes, Enabling Central Bank Money Settlement for Tokenized Assets
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a solution that enables wholesale transactions in tokenized assets to be settled in central bank money. This marks the first step in implementing the ECB's strategy for tokenized finance and is part of its effort to make central bank money suitable for a tokenized future.
Pontes allows for the settlement of tokenized assets using distributed ledger technology, which can combine multiple stages of an asset lifecycle, including issuance, trading, settlement, custody, and servicing. This can lead to faster and more efficient transactions.
The launch of Pontes is built on the results of the ECB's 2024 tests using distributed ledger technology for central bank money settlement. These tests showed that access to a risk-free settlement asset was crucial for wider adoption of this technology. Pontes will initially offer a core set of services, with expansion planned over time in line with market needs and technological developments.
The ECB stated that an initial group of market participants and distributed ledger technology operators has completed onboarding and is ready to use Pontes immediately. Additional participants have committed to connecting in the coming months.
