ECB Launches Pontes, Enabling Tokenized Assets Settlement
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a solution that allows banks and financial infrastructure providers to settle tokenized assets in central bank money. This move is seen as a major step towards integrating digital currencies with traditional finance.
Pontes will enable the settlement of transactions involving tokenized securities, which are financial instruments represented on a blockchain or distributed ledger technology (DLT). The solution will connect DLT platforms to the Eurosystem's TARGET Services, allowing for final settlement in central bank money. This will provide a reliable and trust-worthy anchor for tokenized finance.
The launch of Pontes is part of the ECB's efforts to create a more integrated, innovative, and resilient European financial market. The solution will be expanded over time, with an initial set of features that will gradually expand ahead of a full implementation by 2028.
Several banks and financial institutions have already been onboarded as market participants for Pontes, including ABANCA, BayernLB, Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, Cecabank, Deutsche Bank, Deka Bank, DZ Bank, European Investment Bank, KfW, Memo Bank, NRW.BANK, Santander e Société Générale.
