ECB Launches Pontes, Europe's Tokenized Market Infrastructure
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a major milestone in Europe's transition to tokenized financial markets. The initiative provides official settlement infrastructure for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, allowing trades to settle using central bank money. Only credit institutions will be able to access and use the infrastructure initially, with round-the-clock settlement planned for later stages.
Pontes is designed to solve problems inherent in round-the-clock trading, such as liquidity issues. The EU prioritizes market safety and cross-border integration, offering a central-bank-money settlement alternative for wholesale tokenized markets through Pontes. This approach contrasts with the US market, which is largely driven by Wall Street initiatives.
Nasdaq has invested $100 million in Payward, the parent company of Kraken, to support the evolution of tokenized market infrastructure. The New York Stock Exchange is also developing a blockchain platform for 24/7 trading of tokenized equities and ETFs.
