ECB Launches Pontes Platform for Tokenized Asset Settlement
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched its first platform to settle wholesale operations of tokenized assets using central bank money, called Pontes. This move is part of the ECB's strategic plan to adapt central bank money to the environment of tokenized finance.
Pontes will link blockchain-based platforms where tokenized assets are traded with the ECB's payment infrastructure, allowing these wholesale transactions to be settled in central bank money instead of using stablecoins or tokenized bank deposits.
The platform aims to bring stability and trust to the European tokenized finance ecosystem, providing it with an important advantage for its expansion. The ECB has noted that the platform has already generated strong interest among market participants, with a first group of entities completing the adhesion process and ready to start using Pontes immediately.
The ECB president, Christine Lagarde, stated that 'The Eurosystem is working to achieve a more integrated, innovative, and resilient European financial market in the digital age. We will continue to advance in close collaboration with the market.'
