ECB Launches Pontes Platform for Tokenized Asset Settlement
The European Central Bank has launched its Pontes platform, enabling regulated financial institutions to settle tokenized-asset transactions in euro central-bank money. This move is part of the ECB's efforts to keep central-bank money at the center of Europe's increasingly tokenized financial markets.
Pontes connects distributed-ledger platforms with the Eurosystem's TARGET Services, allowing participating banks to complete tokenized wholesale transactions using central-bank money. The platform addresses the cash leg of trading by offering a central-bank-money settlement option for tokenized bonds, funds, and other financial assets.
The launch of Pontes comes amid ongoing EU digital euro legislative debates and the ECB's aim to safeguard monetary autonomy from private dollar-backed stablecoins. ECB President Christine Lagarde has described Pontes as a form of digital euro for banks using tokenized assets and distributed ledger technology.
