ECB Launches Pontes Platform for Tokenized Finance
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, its first initiative to make central bank money suitable for tokenized finance. Pontes allows for the settlement of wholesale transactions in tokenized assets using central bank money.
Pontes is part of the ECB's strategic program to support the development of a rapidly evolving financial ecosystem. The goal is to enable a more integrated, innovative, and resilient European financial market in the digital age, according to Christine Lagarde, president of the ECB.
The tokenization process involves issuing or representing assets as digital 'tokens' on distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks. Pontes has the potential to make transactions faster and more efficient by automating processes and enabling smart contracts.
