ECB Launches Pontes Platform for Wholesale Digital Euro Settlement
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a platform that enables eligible banks to settle tokenized asset transactions in central bank money. This move marks a significant step towards building a wholesale digital euro infrastructure. Pontes is not the consumer-facing digital euro often discussed, but rather the underlying system that will facilitate transactions between financial institutions.
The ECB has onboarded a broad group of institutions for launch day, including major commercial banks such as Deutsche Bank, Banco Santander, and Société Générale. Public and development finance institutions have also joined, alongside clearing infrastructure providers like Clearstream and Cashlink. The platform will settle transactions using tokenized 'cash tokens' on the Eurosystem's DLT platform or directly through T2, the Eurosystem's real-time gross settlement system.
Pontes is designed to reduce counterparty risk and manual reconciliation times, allowing banks to trade tokenized assets with greater efficiency. The ECB aims to target full 24/7 operations by 2028 and has invited e-commerce and mobile-commerce merchants across the euro area to join a 12-month retail pilot beginning in the second half of 2027.
