ECB Launches Pontes Project for Tokenized Asset Settlements
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched the Pontes project to facilitate the settlement of wholesale operations in tokenized assets using central bank money. This marks a significant step towards modernizing the financial system and developing the digital euro.
Pontes aims to link blockchain-based platforms where tokenized assets are traded with the ECB's payment infrastructure, settling transactions in central bank money instead of stablecoins or tokenized bank deposits. This is seen as an important advantage for the European tokenized finance ecosystem.
The project represents the first operational milestone of a broader strategy that includes the Appia project, planned for 2028. Pontes will initially offer a limited set of services, expanding as market and technology needs evolve.
