ECB Launches Pontes System, Limiting Opportunities for Ripple's RLUSD and XRP in Europe
The European Central Bank (ECB) has introduced a new settlement system called Pontes, which enables eurozone banks to settle trades involving tokenized assets using central bank money instead of stablecoins. This development has significant implications for Ripple's operations in Europe, particularly its dollar stablecoin RLUSD and XRP.
Pontes is designed to connect ledgers used by banks to TARGET Services, the Eurosystem's payment infrastructure, allowing cash to settle as a claim on the ECB. The key difference between Pontes and stablecoins like RLUSD is that central bank money is a direct liability of the ECB, making it safer for regulators.
The system has initially been limited in scope, with 13 eurozone banks and four ledger operators connected, but it has already successfully settled over €1.5 billion in trades during its testing phase. The ECB's move is significant because RLUSD was designed to facilitate tokenized trades between banks, but Pontes has now taken on this role.
Ripple's business still operates outside the scope of Pontes, particularly when it comes to dollar flows and cross-border transactions. However, the timing of the launch means that banks will prefer to use the ECB's system for euro-to-euro settlements within the Eurosystem, limiting the opportunities for RLUSD and XRP.
