ECB Launches Pontes to Streamline Tokenized Asset Transactions
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a platform for settling wholesale tokenized asset transactions in central bank money. This move is part of the Eurosystem's strategy to make central bank money fit for a tokenized future.
Pontes builds on exploratory Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) tests run by the ECB in 2024. Participants in those tests emphasized the need for a risk-free settlement asset for wider adoption.
DLT technology has the potential to streamline transactions, making them faster and more efficient. It can bundle multiple stages of an asset's lifecycle onto one platform, including issuance, trading, settlement, custody, and servicing. Smart contracts can also automate parts of the process.
According to Christine Lagarde, President of the ECB, 'The Eurosystem is working to enable a more integrated, innovative and resilient European financial market in the digital age.'
The platform will start with core services, with enhanced features and longer operating hours to follow. Full implementation is expected by 2028.
