ECB Launches Pontes to Support Tokenized Finance and Invests in Tokenized Securities
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a settlement solution that enables wholesale transactions involving tokenized assets to settle in central bank money. This move marks a significant step towards the adoption of tokenized finance in Europe. Pontes will allow financial institutions and DLT operators to onboard and settle tokenized transactions with central bank money.
The ECB has partnered with various financial institutions, including Deutsche Bank, Santander, Société Générale, and Clearstream, among others. The initial group of participants has already completed onboarding, and the service is expected to expand its functionality and operating hours over time. Full implementation is planned by 2028.
The ECB has also announced that it will invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities, with transactions expected to settle through Pontes. The initial focus will be on euro-denominated securities issued by euro-area governments, regional authorities, agencies, and European supranational institutions. This move is intended to provide the ECB with direct experience across the investment lifecycle, including trading, settlement, systems, and portfolio management using distributed-ledger technology.
