ECB Launches Pontes, Tokenized Asset Settlement Service
The European Central Bank (ECB) has made a significant move towards integrating distributed ledger technology into Europe's core financial infrastructure. The ECB launched Pontes, a service that allows wholesale tokenized asset transactions to settle in central bank money.
Pontes acts as a bridge between distributed ledger networks and the Eurosystem's TARGET settlement services, enabling banks and market infrastructures to access a risk-free settlement asset without abandoning emerging tokenized market structures. This move is crucial because one of the biggest barriers to scaling tokenized finance has been settlement.
The ECB built on its extensive DLT trials in 2024, which involved over €1.59 billion in transactions and tested how DLT platforms could interact with central bank money settlement. An initial group of participants, including Deutsche Bank, Santander, Société Générale, the European Investment Bank, and several German public-sector banks, has completed onboarding.
The ECB is also preparing to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenized securities through Pontes, initially focusing on euro-denominated public-sector and supranational instruments. This marks a significant shift as the ECB is no longer simply observing tokenization or providing settlement infrastructure; it is preparing to participate directly as an investor.
