ECB Launches Project Pontes, Challenging Stablecoins with Tokenized Assets Settlement
The European Central Bank (ECB) has made significant strides in tokenizing assets using central bank money, challenging traditional stablecoins. According to an ECB member, Isabel Schnabel, central banks should adopt programmable digital reserves to enable tokenized assets and final payments to settle in one environment.
This is evident in the launch of Project Pontes, which aims to create a platform for tokenized assets to settle in central bank money. The initiative seeks to address Europe's €10 trillion idle cash problem, where approximately 1% annually is remunerated on bank deposits held by euro-area households.
The ECB has also opened a call for online and mobile merchants willing to participate in a 12-month digital euro pilot. This move is part of the central bank's efforts to promote the use of digital currencies and improve financial inclusion.
