ECB Launches Wholesale Digital Euro Platform for Eurozone Banks
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched its Pontes wholesale digital euro platform for banks in the eurozone. Starting from June 24, 2024, the platform will enable 13 lenders to settle tokenised transactions using central bank money. The ECB aims to reduce reliance on private stablecoins and foreign payments groups by positioning central bank digital money as a stable alternative.
The Pontes platform connects private ledger operators with lenders across the eurozone through the ECB's existing Target2 payments infrastructure. It will initially operate from 8am to 4pm, but plans are in place to make it available 24/7 by 2028. The ECB itself will also invest part of its funds in tokenised securities on Pontes.
The launch is a key step in the ECB's broader effort to modernise the eurozone's money and payments infrastructure. A retail digital euro project is still under development, but it is expected to be launched by 2029 pending legislative approval. The ECB argues that both wholesale and retail digital euro projects are needed to protect the euro area's sovereignty and freedom of action.
ECB executive board member Piero Cipollone says Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to Europe's tokenised finance ecosystem. More participants, including distributed-ledger operators, will join the platform over the coming months.
