ECB Leadership Shake-Up Looms as Lagarde and Others Prepare to Depart
The European Central Bank (ECB) is facing a leadership shake-up next year as its president, Christine Lagarde, and several other top officials are set to leave their positions. The euro zone will choose a new ECB president in 2024, and up to two-thirds of the bank's six-member executive board will be replaced.
Lagarde's term runs until October 31, 2027, but there have been persistent rumors that she may step down early. Isabel Schnabel, an executive board member responsible for market operations, is leaving to take up a position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while Philip Lane, the ECB's chief economist, will end his term on May 31.
The appointments are expected to be negotiated as a broader package, with officials seeking to maintain political and geographic balance on the board. Frontrunners to succeed Lagarde include Bank for International Settlements General Manager Pablo Hernandez de Cos and former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot.
