ECB Links Blockchain with Euro Payment System in Major Digital Euro Step
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a key link between blockchain and euro payment systems, marking a significant step forward in its efforts to develop a digital euro.
The Pontes project allows banks to settle tokenized wholesale transactions in central-bank money, while the ECB continues working on a longer-term solution known as Appia. A blueprint for Appia is expected to be ready by 2028, which will eventually replace Pontes.
This move aims to bridge the gap between blockchain markets and the euro area's existing payment systems, paving the way for greater efficiency and speed in cross-border transactions.
