ECB Official Schnabel Resigns for IMF Role Amid Lagarde Speculation

Isabel Schnabel, a top official at the European Central Bank (ECB), has announced her resignation. She will leave her position as an executive board member in January to take up a new role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington.

Schnabel's term was set to expire in 2027, but she is stepping down early to join the IMF as financial counsellor and director of the monetary and capital markets department. Her departure comes as speculation swirls about whether President Christine Lagarde will leave her position at the ECB before her term officially ends next year.

Lagarde has been linked to a potential role at the World Economic Forum in Davos, although she has publicly denied any involvement. The French and German governments are reportedly keen to appoint Lagarde's successor before France's presidential elections in 2027, which Marine Le Pen is expected to win.
