ECB Plans 2029 Digital Euro Launch to Strengthen European Banks
The European Central Bank (ECB) has stated that the introduction of a digital euro will enhance the competitiveness of European banks and payment providers. The project aims to address current shortcomings in Europe’s payment systems while also preparing the region for future innovations.
ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone emphasized that the digital euro will offer new opportunities and ensure that Europe’s payment service providers can build a strong competitive advantage. The ECB plans to launch a pilot program next year, with an official rollout targeted for 2029.
The digital euro project is also designed to bolster Europe’s monetary sovereignty. The region’s heavy reliance on U.S. payment companies like Visa and Mastercard, along with the growing stablecoin market pegged to the dollar, has raised concerns among European policymakers.
