ECB Pontes Platform Brings Blockchain Settlement to Eurozone Finance
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched its Pontes platform, which allows banks to settle blockchain-based securities trades using central bank money. The new service went live on September 21 and marks a significant step towards making ECB blockchain settlement a working part of European finance.
Pontes connects distributed ledger platforms with the Eurosystem's TARGET payment services, enabling tokenized asset transactions to settle against central bank funds while retaining the settlement protections used in conventional financial plumbing. The platform currently operates between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. CET on business days, with initial participants including Deutsche Bank, Santander, and Clearstream.
The ECB plans to put a small slice of its €23 billion own funds portfolio into blockchain-issued securities and is updating its DLT collateral framework to allow for the use of tokenized assets as collateral. The central bank also has a retail digital euro pilot planned for the second half of 2027, with possible issuance by 2029 pending EU legislation and Governing Council approval.
