ECB Prepares for Digital Euro Pilot in 2027
The European Central Bank (ECB) is moving forward with plans for a digital euro, with a large-scale pilot expected to begin in the second half of 2027. The project has entered a more practical phase, and the ECB has selected 36 payment service providers for the pilot. These providers will test payments in everyday situations, including between individuals, purchases in physical stores, and online transactions.
The pilot will also test both online and offline payments, but the beta digital euro used in the pilot will not have legal tender status. The ECB has invited online and mobile merchants to express interest in joining the pilot, with applications remaining open until October 27, 2026.
The digital euro is intended to provide a widely usable digital form of central bank money across the euro area, according to the European Commission. It would give consumers and businesses another way to make payments while complementing cash rather than replacing it. People would not be required to use digital euros, and the system could be available to people who do not have a traditional bank account.
