ECB Prepares to Invest Own Funds in Tokenized Securities
The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing to invest its own funds in tokenized securities, marking a significant step towards integrating distributed ledger technology into financial markets. The initial purchases will focus on euro-denominated public-sector and supranational debt, settled through the ECB's Pontes service.
Pontes allows transactions to settle with cash tokens or through the Eurosystem's T2 payment system, reducing manual work and increasing efficiency. The Hash-Link protocol synchronizes asset transfers and payments, providing a secure and reliable framework for tokenized transactions.
The ECB aims to gain practical experience as an investor and build institutional expertise in DLT-based market infrastructures. By investing directly, the bank will have first-hand knowledge of the entire investment lifecycle, including trade execution, settlement, systems, and portfolio management activities.
