The European Central Bank (ECB) has released its consolidated banking data for the end of June 2026, revealing key insights into the EU's banking sector. Total assets of EU-headquartered credit institutions grew by 5.18% year-over-year, reaching €34.99 trillion, up from €33.27 trillion in June 2025. This growth reflects the expanding balance sheets of the EU's banking system.
However, the data also highlights a slight increase in the non-performing loans ratio, which rose by 0.03 percentage points to 1.99% in June 2026. This metric indicates a marginal rise in loan defaults within the EU banking sector. Despite this, the aggregate return on equity for EU credit institutions stood at 5.31% in June 2026, suggesting stable profitability.
The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio, a key measure of a bank's capital strength, was reported at 16.43% for EU credit institutions. This ratio reflects the banks' ability to absorb potential losses and maintain financial stability. The ECB's data covers 336 banking groups and 2,283 stand-alone credit institutions, representing nearly 100% of the EU banking sector's balance sheet.
The dataset includes various indicators on profitability, efficiency, balance sheet composition, liquidity, funding, asset quality, asset encumbrance, capital adequacy, and solvency. The information is compiled on a group consolidated basis and is available in the ECB Data Portal. The data also includes revisions to past figures, ensuring accuracy and relevance for financial analysis.
