ECB Reveals Euro Banknote Design Consultation Response Tops 9 Million
The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced the results of its public consultation on the design of new euro banknotes. The consultation, which took place from July 23 to September 21, saw a massive response with almost 10 million people sharing their views.
The ECB received 9.96 million responses, with President Christine Lagarde describing it as a sign of 'great interest' in the future appearance of the euro currency. The public was invited to provide opinions on ten shortlisted designs based on two themes: 'European culture' and 'rivers and birds'.
The cultural proposals feature figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner. The natural environment theme focuses on European bird species like the wallcreeper, kingfisher, and white stork.
The ECB will now analyze the responses using statistical methods to ensure they reflect the views of people across the eurozone. The Governing Council is expected to select the final design by the end of this year, taking into account various factors including public consultation, technical assessments, and recommendations from a design jury.
