ECB Seeks Merchants for Digital Euro Pilot Program
The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking merchants to participate in testing its digital euro, a central bank-issued currency. Since September 15, the ECB has been accepting applications from e-commerce and mobile commerce companies for the pilot program.
The test will last 12 months, starting in the second half of 2027. It aims to bring together merchants, banks, payment service providers, and members of the Eurosystem to replicate real-world scenarios with the digital euro.
The selected merchants must be able to accept payments with the beta version of the digital euro, work with one of the approved payment service providers, and provide feedback on market presence, operational capacity, and integration. The pilot will test various use cases, including in-store payments, remote purchases, and transfers between individuals.
