ECB Seeks Simpler EU Bank Rules to Boost Competitiveness
The European Central Bank (ECB) is pushing for simpler EU bank rules to boost competitiveness in the sector. In a recent speech, ECB Vice-President Boris Vujčić argued that stronger capital positions and better return on equity reflect resilience, not regulatory burdens.
Vujčić emphasized that current capital requirements are not a disadvantage and highlighted the importance of deeper financial integration and completion of the banking union as drivers for EU banking competitiveness.
The ECB has proposed simplifying the EU's regulatory, supervisory, and reporting frameworks for banks. This includes merging existing capital buffers into non-releasable and releasable buffers, simplifying the leverage ratio framework, and creating a more proportionate dedicated regime for smaller banks.
