The European Central Bank (ECB) has formally requested EU leaders to begin the search for a successor to Chief Economist Philip Lane. This move opens the race for another vacancy on the ECB’s Executive Board.
A spokesperson for Antonio Costa, the chief of the European Council, confirmed that President Christine Lagarde sent a letter to Costa. The letter asks to launch the formal procedure for appointing Lane’s successor.
The request comes as the ECB faces another leadership transition, following recent changes on its Executive Board. The process will now involve EU leaders identifying and selecting a candidate to fill the critical role of Chief Economist.
