ECB Sees Record Interest in Euro Banknote Redesign

The European Central Bank (ECB) recently wrapped up its public survey on the design of future euro banknotes, and the response was overwhelming. A total of 9.96 million people from across Europe and beyond shared their opinions, showing a strong interest in the redesign process.

This number accounts for about 2.6% of the euro area population, indicating that younger generations were particularly engaged, with two-thirds of responses coming from people under the age of 35.

The survey ran between July 23 and September 21, 2026, and sought public opinions on ten shortlisted design proposals based on the themes 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds'. The results will inform the ECB Governing Council's decision on the final design concept for the future euro banknotes, which is expected around the end of 2026.

The ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that this amazing number shows how much interest Europeans have in their future banknotes. With them participating in the redesign process, an important step has been taken in preparing the next series of banknotes.
