ECB Sounds Alarm on Converging AI Risks in Financial Markets
ECB President Christine Lagarde has sounded the alarm on AI-related risks in financial markets. She expressed concern that these risks are starting to converge, creating a broader threat to financial stability.
In her latest speech, Lagarde noted that nearly nine in ten significant euro-area banks already use generative AI. Meanwhile, seven in ten surveyed EU securities firms expect to increase their AI investment.
The problem is not just that individual models could fail, but that the interconnectedness of these systems could lead to a cascade effect. If similar models interpret a shock similarly and recommend the same trades at roughly the same time, it could reinforce price moves rather than diversify them.
