ECB Speeches Move Markets, Bitcoin Link Remains Uncertain
A recent analysis of European Central Bank (ECB) speeches and interviews found that they can significantly influence market expectations between formal policy meetings.
The study, which covered monetary-policy events from January 2004 through October 2023, discovered that ECB President Christine Lagarde's speeches produced cumulative absolute movements of 473.5 basis points in two-year overnight index swap rates and 538.9 basis points in 10-year overnight index swap rates.
This had a significant impact on European interest rates and bond yields, with the cumulative changes reaching 556.2 basis points in German 10-year bond yields and 716.3 basis points in Italian 10-year yields.
ECB Vice President Boris Vujčić attributed the recent rise in bond yields to higher inflation expectations, changes in terminal-rate pricing, fiscal deficits, sovereign issuance, corporate bond supply, and spillovers from other major central banks.
