ECB Succession Battle Heats Up Amid Schnabel's Surprise Resignation
Isabel Schnabel's surprise resignation from her role at the European Central Bank (ECB) has set off a high-stakes succession battle for three key positions, including her markets portfolio and the jobs currently held by Christine Lagarde and Philip Lane.
The timing is uncertain as Lagarde has not announced any early exit, prompting capitals to begin trading favors. Greece's leader labeled the horse-trading 'a grand bargain,' highlighting the intense political nature of the situation.
Four possible routes are in play for who could take over as ECB president, with Klaas Knot and Pablo Hernandez de Cos emerging as top contenders. Knot, a seasoned voice on the Governing Council, brings crisis management experience from his time as chairman of the Financial Stability Board.
Hernandez de Cos, currently leading the Bank for International Settlements, would be the first non-Eurozone candidate to hold the position and the first Spaniard to do so. However, his dovish past could pose a challenge in securing support from EU governments leaning towards center or right politics.
