ECB Takes First Direct Investment in Tokenized Securities
The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking its first direct investments in tokenized securities. A small portion of the ECB's own funds will be placed in bonds and other euro-denominated securities, primarily issued by eurozone states, public agencies, and European institutions.
The targeted assets are mainly public and supranational euro bonds, which will be settled through Pontes, a new infrastructure launched by the Eurosystem on September 21. The ECB aims to gain concrete experience with order execution, settlement, system management, and portfolio monitoring.
The amount of investment is not yet fixed, and it will depend on the availability of tokenized securities on the European market. This move marks a significant shift for the ECB, as it no longer just observes tokenization but wants to use it itself. The institution reuses some building blocks from blockchain markets while keeping central bank money at the core of settlement.
