ECB Taps AI for Digital Euro Payments
The European Central Bank (ECB) is exploring ways to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) agents and machine-to-machine payment technology into digital euro transactions. The ECB's Digital Euro Innovation Platform has opened applications for its next phase, with selected organizations participating in a proof-of-concept program from January through June 2027.
The program consists of two tracks: workshops examining AI agent interactions with payment systems, micropayments, and new features for payment applications; and a hands-on prototyping initiative focused on building actual working payment functionality. Participating firms will develop prototypes across four areas: electronic receipts, transactions involving multiple parties, conditional payments that execute automatically when specified conditions are met, and new features for payment applications.
The ECB emphasizes that AI agent payments are not guaranteed to become a confirmed feature of the digital euro. The bank has clarified that devices or AI systems would not receive unlimited authority to spend digital euros, and participants proposing AI payment features must consider privacy-by-design principles, user control, and data protection.
