ECB Tests AI-Powered Digital Euro Payments
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a new program to explore the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital euro payments. The program, set to begin in 2027, will test AI-powered payment experiences and machine interactions through workshops and prototype development.
Participants in the program will focus on four key areas: electronic receipts, multiparty transactions, conditional payments, and new features for payment applications. They must consider privacy-by-design principles, user control, and data protection when developing their ideas.
The ECB has separated the work into two programs, one focused on building working payment features and another looking at technologies that could become useful later. The central bank aims to examine how AI agents can interact with a possible digital euro without committing to any specific feature for a future launch.
