ECB Tests Digital Euro Payment Process With Merchant Pilot

The European Central Bank (ECB) is taking its digital euro project to the next level by inviting online and mobile merchants to test beta payments in a 12-month pilot.

The ECB has opened applications for e-commerce and mobile-commerce businesses operating across the European Union to join the pilot, which aims to test whether a beta digital euro can fit existing payment journeys without creating excessive merchant friction.

Merchants must provide a dedicated checkout flow that only pilot participants can access and establish or adapt a contract with an acquiring pilot Payment Service Provider (PSP).
