ECB Unveils Comprehensive Payments Strategy Amid Tokenisation Boom
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled its comprehensive strategy for the future of European payments, driven by technological advancements and geopolitical factors.
In March this year, the Eurosystem set out a vision for payment systems that are integrated, innovative, and competitive. The ECB's Director General Market Infrastructure and Payments, Thomas Vlassopoulos, stated that central bank money must retain its anchoring role to ensure monetary policy, financial stability, and smooth functioning of payment systems.
The strategy has four key objectives: retaining the centrality of central bank money, achieving strategic autonomy and sovereignty in payments, creating an integrated and innovative payments system, and supporting the international role of the euro for trade and financial transactions.
Pontes is a key initiative by the ECB to enable transactions on distributed ledger technology (DLT) platforms to be settled in central bank money. This aims to address interoperability challenges and give institutional investors confidence in tokenisation without price volatility or risk-limit constraints.
