The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled its final designs for new euro banknotes, inviting citizens to participate in the selection process. The initiative marks a significant change for the euro's banknotes, bringing an end to the €500 note after the public consultation concludes on September 21.

The redesign will represent the first comprehensive update since the euro was introduced in 2002. The selected designs focus on two themes: 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds,' highlighting the continent's cultural heritage and natural wealth.

Under the 'European Culture' theme, notable figures like Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner are proposed for specific banknotes. A Greek graphic designer, Myrsini Vardopoulou, is among those whose work made the final shortlist.

The public consultation is already underway and will remain open until September 21, giving European citizens a direct role in shaping the appearance of the next generation of euro banknotes.
