ECB Unveils Pontes, Digital Euro Solution for Wholesale Transactions
The European Central Bank (ECB) is expanding its digital euro efforts with the launch of Pontes, a new solution for wholesale transactions in tokenized assets. The ECB announced Monday that Pontes allows settlements using central bank money.
Pontes uses tokenization technology to issue or represent assets in digital tokens, often using distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks. This technology has the potential to make transactions faster and more efficient by bundling multiple steps of an asset's lifecycle and enabling automation through smart contracts.
The ECB says Pontes will initially focus on a core set of services before introducing enhanced features and longer operating hours, with full implementation expected by 2028. The central bank notes that Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenized finance ecosystem.
